The longest period of rain occurred some 230 million years ago when it rained continuously for 1-2 million years. We are just so lucky.
We often pause for a few minutes rest, water and, sometimes, an orange or a chocolate at bus stops which in Portugal are covered and protected from wind on 3 sides and have a nice bench. They are invaluable, especially in the driving rain. After one such stop today we were walking along for 10 or 15 minutes when a white Audi pulled up along side. A 30sh man wearing an LA Lakers sweat shirt hopped out to hand me the walking stick I left at the bus stop, got back in the car, turned around and sped off before I had a chance to thank him or ask him his name. Faith in human nature restored.
Our day’s rest in Porto was, well, restorative. We saw some sights, including the most impressive church of St Francis with Prince Henry’s private chapel and the Cathedral with the extravagant gilded main alter. Also tasted some fine Port and ate some great meals. It was windy and raining so we were also happy sitting in the hotel’s library reading.

Dearest Paula and Edward, we’ve been travelling a lot – 2 weeks in the States – St Louis, WDC, New Haven and NYC and returned to London just for a few days (hosting 22 for Passover) and left the next morning (last Sunday) for Umbria. We only made it to Reims- such an incredible cathedral – and arrived at Monte Carona at 3.00am this Tuesday – driving through rain and rain and more rain. But lovely to be here. All this to say that I’ve just caught up with about 10 days of your travels and I’m with you again. Loving every chapter of your adventures, the people you meet, the sites you see and your funny and often very touching asides about life. Wonderful reading! Take care. I’ll stay with you and I hope your walking sometimes takes your mind off of the pain and horror of what’s going on in the States. It’s all we talk about! Sending you all good wishes on this third amazing adventure and ever and always with my love, Susie
